Bruce keeps up with the latest in Web Site technology, social networking, and internet marketing
If you feel that you should be on this list, feel free to add a comment to this blog post.
As I finally took Hot Web Ideas, Inc. full time in 2009, I started doing more business networking and realized how valuable of a marketing tool it really is. I have made so many friends and business relationships at some of the hottest business networking meetings on the island.
During late 2008 and all throughout 2009, I have encountered many people this year who just give and give and give and want nothing in return. They often sport the phrase “it is all about you and not at all about me”. Compared to some of the other famous people in the Long Island business networking community, these people do not charge money to help promote you. There are so many famous people in the Long Island business networking world, but most of them will not promote you unless you pay them some fee, usually in the $300 to $700 range for an ad on their web site. Once you pay those people, then they give and give and give, but again, only after you pay them money.
The terms “givers” and “takers” are the latest buzz words in business. A giver is someone who like the people below, just promote you and your business and want nothing in return. A taker is someone who will do nothing for you until you pay them or compensate them in some other way. I think there is a 3rd term called “receiver”, which is similar to a “taker”, but becoming a receiver is an amazing accomplishment, because this happens only after you become a giver in someone’s eyes. Becoming a receiver is automatic and the next stage from a giver.
For example, I consider myself a giver as I offer free marketing via video podcasts to local business people, free seminars (yes some of them are paid, but most of them are not), and have created several free web sites including the Long Island Blog Directory, the Long Island Podcast Network, and the Long Island Social Media Business Directory. However, there are just so many more people out there who give a lot more.
The reason I consider myself a giver is because I never ask for money for these web sites. We will be offering upgraded memberships on the Long Island Social Media Business Directory in 2010 to help you get more connections on Facebook and Linked In, but basic membership will ALWAYS be free, unlike some of the popular business advertising web sites on Long Island where a basic listing costs money.
There are so many givers out there in Long Island, but it is hard to name them all in this blog post. Maybe I have not met them yet which is why they are not listed here, but trust me, when I meet you at business networking meetings, I will be glad to list you here:
Here are 2009’s biggest givers in the Long Island business community: If you feel that you should be on this list, feel free to add a comment.
Yvonne Bisk:

Michele Michael:

Do you think Michele does all this for living? Not at all! She does all this for free in addition to having 2 businesses: It’s a Sign and her commercial real estate business.
John Ciampa:

With this partner Carolina Federico, Bloggers School holds social media events at the Roger Smith Hotel, classes, and keeps people informed with the cutting edge technologies of Social Media. John, you go Boy!
Rich Kruse:

Rich has been involved with local politicians and was a big player in the marketing of the New York Islanders.
Knowing Rich Kruse was a pleasure and an association with this amazing man is a great asset to anyone’s business.
Adrian Miller:

Knowing Adrian Miller, I have already acquired 3 clients and 2 leads, including an improved version of Adrian’s web site AdrianMiller.com which I performed search engine optimization for.
Erica Prince:

Erica creates opportunities for speakers to grow their business through speaking engagements. She works with health professionals, lawyers, accountants, people in the financial industry, entrepreneurs, consultants who use her service, which is unique. Her concentration is the Long Island/Queens/Manhattan areas. With lots of contacts with different venues she is able to open doors and opportunities for speakers to make their presentations. She works with hundreds of groups that need speakers and has filled a need in that niche market through creatively marketing her topics and speakers. She is the consummate deal-maker and matchmaker.
In early 2010, Erica will be holding a series of webinars called the “Public Speaking: The Gold Card of Marketing”. Erica has been featured on WCBS, 880AM with Joe Connollly, Small Business Consultant.
I encourage people to attend Erica’s business networking events and for those of you who have not yet attended one, let me know and I will send you information on the next event, which will be on January 11, 2010.
Donna Drake:

Debi Pisano:

A regular fulltimer at Island Group Plans in Bohemia, Debi was a huge asset to the Long Island Way’s 2009 Breakfast of Champions, but also remains a huge asset to the Long Island business community attending many business networking events. Debi also remains an active member of the Melville Chamber of Commerce. I consider Debi a true business networker.

Hi Bruce,
how does one go about being included on this page about being a “giver”? I have been an Executive Recruiter for the past 11 years and I’ve always gotten back to people, help people with their resumes, interview skills, building their confidence… basically helping anyone I can at no cost because I am a firm believer in good karma…. whyen you do for other people consistently it does come back to you in some way. I started my own business 2 1/2 years ago and this past year bout a town house as well. I can barely pay my bills… I anticipated the job market picking up by now but it hasn’t. My salary this year will be below poverty level just to keep my business up…. My thoughts are fall all the good I’ve done I know it will come back. I also started my career as a social worker with intentions of helping people and transitioned my career into an Executive Recruiter- still helping others but more with increasing their self confidence, negotiating skills, and interviewing skills.

Hey Julie, that is great that you are giver and I am sorry that your business has been slow in this economy. As a business networker on Long Island, I have met hundreds of business owners and the people on my original blog post, I have met them all. Have you and I met?
Either way, based on your accomplishments with job seekers, it looks like you are one heck of a giver yourself.
Keep up the good work, Julie!

Thanks for featuring these L.I. givers, Bruce. “Givers” are so busy reaching out to better our communities and their time and efforts may go unnoticed, so it’s nice to introduce them to the public. Great idea. Oh, and you are quite a giver yourself!

I am truly honored to be considered among these wonderful LI’er’s. Thx Bruce.
You have been a great support and help to me as well and the people in the business community.
We really have something to look back on when we think about the end of the first decade of the millenium.
I will remember how LI businesses united and formed a great business friendship during an incredible time in history.
“I don’t know if you are a giver or a taker but I certainly know a genuine person when I meet one” Be Genuine!!!!It shows!
( I think it raises your serotonin levels)
I want to add David Gussin from 516ads/631ads to that list.

Good morning Bruce and all reading and adding to this blog,
Thank you for including me in the list of the most giving people in the Long Island Business Networking Community.
You do not have to attend each and every meeting on Long Island, just find a small number of groups that you feel comfortable with and let the people get to know you. People buy from people… or as one of my online friends says ‘buy from you bud’
I feel like a real celebrity after reading this post. You got me sitting here, reading this BLUSHING
When I started my group 3 years ago, I had no idea how it would turn out. At this moment we have reached the incrdible number of 800 members, we are holding meetings twice a month and we have outgrown many locations. It is a lot of work to organize a group like this, but I still enjoy every minute of it. I love seeing people making connections, I like to read through their bio’s and connect those that have not met in person yet, I put members in the spotlight as much as I can. Like you mnetioned Bruce, not through paid advertisement (kuddos to the people that do, they are very much needed also), but through having their name and website published on the website and blog for example when they bring raffle gifts, as a featured business or by letting everyone know about anything published about them or their business.
I can not imagine a business plan in this time and age, that does not include networking
Happy Holidays,
Yvonne

Hey Alan, thanks for the comments. The problem with the final list is that there are so many great people to list that it is hard to know where to stop. I have to draw the line somewhere.
My solution is to just keep updating this blog article. I know that business people all over Long Island have their favorites, so I encourage anyone who loves blogging to write a blog article like this.

Bruce,
This is such a great idea. I never buy the newspaper and avoid watching the news because it’s always filled with such sadness and tragedy. What you’re trying to do here is terrific. I have met the nicest people and formed great relationships in the networking circles. Most of the people I met are givers and not takers. I was at Savannah’s last night and there was this guy just standing there with his cards in his hand and shoving them in your face as you walked by, not even interested if you stopped and said hello. He has no idea what it’s really all about. And then there’s the opposite spectrum, which you’re highlighting here. There couldn’t be a greater example than Yvonne Bisk. It’s very heartwarming to be able to call them friends.
You too, Bruce, are a great example of giving of your time and knowledge. Teresa Ward comes to my mind as another fine example of someone who tries to tie in giving back with networking. And that’s my kind of networking.
Keep up the great work,
Debbie Viola

There’s givers, there’s takers and than there’s counters. Don’t be a counter, be a doer and good things will happen.
As far as ‘givers & takers’; I get the emotional end, and thankfully, the LI networking world I know is full of GIVERS. Tons of them. Really GREAT stuff. From a ‘givers & takers’ business end, one of many ways to see it is … networking gives people LOTS of opportunities, it’s up to each individual networker to take advantage of them. Happy Holidays!!! – David

Hey Bruce, great blog post and there are some heavy hitters here. I have met about half of the people on the list and it goes to show that you attend a lot of networking events yourself, besides being a giver for all those cool web sites you develop.
Keep up the good work and I now subscribe to your blog regularly.
Your other great blog posts are the one on Competition and the other on the Long Island Press Best of Long Island contest.

Bruce, WOW! Thank you very much. It’s an honor to be named to this list. It brought a little tear to my eye. I thought how proud my mom would have been to see my name on a list like this instead of always having my name on the chalk board in school for being too social! When I moved from St. Louis to New York 16 years ago I didn’t know a soul. I would go to the park with my children when they were young and just strike up a conversation with other park goers. That was truly my first “networking” on the Island. I did the same in business which is why most of my dearest friends on the Island also happen to be the people I now do business with. As Yvonne shared in her post, “buy from a bud”. My business plan for success comes from collaboration and not from competition. Lucy Rosen once said, “Donna you’re a collector of people”–And I guess your blog validates that. Being able to help someone and make a difference in their life thrills me. The entire TV show of Live It Up was created with that mission in mind. Thank you sincerely for the recognition. I facilitate a chapter of Women On The Fast Track. If anyone reading this would like to get involved please contact me. Peace to all this holiday season.

Hey Donna, I am glad that you like being on this list. You deserve it. You have more accomplishments that I can count and that’s great.
If your teacher wrote you up on the chalkboard for being too “social”, it would have been cool if you could have looked into the future of the year 2008 and 2009 and told her that the latest marketing trends for these years would contain the word “social”.
